What Was Written Down
Traditional custodians of the Phiphidi waterfall's two sacred places, the rock above the falls (Lanwadzongolo) and the pool below (Guvhukuvhu), where beer and grain offerings are made to water spirits. The clan's 2008 document records that its members go by both Ramunangi and Mudau, that it lost control of the site after Venda's 1979 proclamation and the tourism development backed by the local Tshivhase headman, and that the sacred rock was destroyed by road building.
